Piedras Marcadas Canyon

Las Marcadas and The Trails at Las Marcadas subdivisions are situated near Piedras Marcadas Canyon at Petroglyph National Monument in Northwest Albuquerque.

Petroglyph National Monument

There is a parking area just off of Golf Course Blvd south of Paradise Blvd. If you are heading south take the first possible right on Jill Patricia and go about 150 feet. You'll see the parking lot on your right. You can access the northernmost trailhead from this lot.

The trail is 1.8 miles long and is moderately difficult mostly due to the altitude (about 5,000 feet) and due to the unpaved trails.

The monument itself stretches for 17 miles along Albuquerque's west side. There are over 20,000 images that were carved into the stone by early inhabitnats of the area.

Here's the trail a few hundred feet from the parking lot. You can see houses along Jill Patricia St on the left and two fingers of the lava flow in the distance the right.

You can stay on the main trail or venture off on one of the many sidetrails to go deeper into the monument. Some Petroglyphs that are easily visible from the main trail, others are not and require you to explore a little bit.

Different carvings will pop out of the rocks at you depending upon the time of day. In general, visibility is best during the late afternoon and early evening.

Some of the rock drawings were carved by Native Americans, some by Spaniards as they travelled through the area.

Residents of Las Marcadas and The Trails at Las Marcadas frequently hike the area or walk their dogs through a portion of the park that is open space maintained by the City of Albuquerque.

Venturing of the trails is not recommended for two reasons. First, to protect and respect the images, and second, to stay clear of Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes.

Easy Access to Piedras Marcadas Canyon is just one reason to consider living in our beautiful neighborhood.
